One of the most difficult jobs a person can have is that of being a parent. The parent position does not come with a manual or directions. PSFC offers Parenting Education Courses to lend support, guidance, and expertise to parents in Monroe County. These courses, which are based on the “Exploring Parenting” model, are currently available only to parents of enrolled children. Sessions are held in the fall and spring.
The curriculum consists of 10 weekly two-hour sessions. Parents must attend nine of the ten scheduled sessions to successfully complete the course. On-site child care is available with two weeks prior notice to the facilitator. The sessions are facilitated by two highly qualified and experienced PSFC staff members. This program qualifies as parenting course training for the Monroe County CYS office.
PSFC parents can also enroll in the agency's Health Literacy classes, which provide information on wellness, safety and what to do when your child gets sick. Attendees are given a healthy families kit, which includes books, first aid necessities, and a thermometer.
The Health Literacy program has been funded by the Blue Ribbon Foundation of Blue Cross of Northeastern PA and most recently, the United Way of Monroe County. In June 2014, PSFC was awarded a $3,000 Dr. Claus G. Jordan grant from the Pocono Health Foundation to fund the initiative.
