Celebrating Head Start Awareness Month 2024: A Legacy of Impact and Empowerment

This October, Pocono Services for Families and Children (PSFC) is proud to join the national celebration of Head Start Awareness Month. Since its inception in 1965 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty, Head Start has been a transformative program, offering comprehensive early childhood education and critical family support to millions of children and families across the United States.

Head Start’s mission is simple yet powerful: to ensure every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the tools they need to succeed. Through a holistic approach that nurtures the whole child—addressing educational, health, nutritional, and social-emotional needs—Head Start equips children from birth to age five with the skills necessary to thrive in both school and life.

At PSFC, we’re dedicated to continuing this legacy, providing not only high-quality education but also vital resources that extend beyond the classroom. By working hand-in-hand with families, we help create enriching home environments that foster each child’s growth and development. From hearing and vision screenings to dental care, mental health support, and nutritional services, we’re committed to ensuring that our children—and their families—have access to the full range of services they need.

Join the Celebration

Throughout October, we invite you to celebrate the profound impact of Head Start by sharing your stories and participating in awareness activities. Use the hashtag #HeadStartAwareness to join the conversation on social media and spread the word about the life-changing impact of this program.

As we reflect on the 59 years of Head Start’s success, we’re reminded that the work is not done. The challenges faced by families—especially in the wake of the pandemic and amid growing income inequality—make the support provided by Head Start more crucial than ever.

“Head Start is more than a classroom—it’s a community,” said NHSA Executive Director Yasmina Vinci. “By investing in children from an early age, we are investing in the future of our country.”

A Lasting Legacy

Since President Ronald Reagan declared October as Head Start Awareness Month in 1982, this month has been a time to honor the program’s historical roots, its current contributions, and the enduring legacy it continues to build. Today, Head Start serves 800,000 children and families annually and has helped more than 37 million children since its founding.

At PSFC, we remain committed to empowering children and families in our community, working together to ensure that where you come from does not stand in the way of where you’re going.

Join us in celebrating Head Start Awareness Month 2024 and the promise of a brighter future for every child.
